Elevenses

From Wikipedia:

” In the United Kingdom and Commonwealth, elevenses is a snack that is similar to afternoon tea, but eaten in the morning. It is generally less savoury than brunch, and might consist of some cake or biscuits with a cup of tea or coffee. In Australia, it is called morning tea (often little lunch or playlunch in primary school). The name refers to the time of day that it is taken: around 11 am. The word “elevenses” is seen as a little old fashioned, and few people still refer to morning tea as such, though it is still used in much of Britain.”

I have decided as an experiment to implement either elevenses or afternoon tea into my working day schedule.  It has occurred to me after being moved through two departments in succession over the course of about a month and a half that maybe I’m working too quickly and not goofing off enough.   Although both departments were short by a drafter or more and “drowning” in work, they somehow with my presence got caught up a bit quick it seems.  In particular, I started having a problem in the last department I was in with running out of work by 15:00 or so.  Quite awkward, and I can’t goof off for two hours straight on a company Internet connection.  Slashdot just doesn’t update that frequently, and someone might ask a question or something.  Besides, despite my best efforts I still have a conscience.  And I just get plain bored.

So, since I seem incapable of slowing down and goofing off in an unstructured fashion, I’ll just have to do it in a structured, organized manner.  And what better way to do this than by borrowing from the highly civilized, advanced customs of the old British Empire?   I always get hungry at about 11:00 anyway, and just wait till 12:00 for lunch.  Why not take time out for tea with a little pastry?  In other words, why not take elevenses?  We’ve got a microwave to heat water in for tea.  And why not take afternoon tea, or low tea, as well?  I always start slowing down right around 16:00.  The Brits seem to have this all figured out, I tell you…  I’m impressed.  And to make sure I remember, I’ll set the AT daemon on my system to remind me at the appropriate times (because I’m such a structured fellow anyway).  Won’t that be grand?  :D
And thanks to Wikipedia for being awesome again!

These are totally excellent ideas, Tempest. I had the constant problem of running out of work myself, and eventually my boss just learned to pile it on me as deeply as he could. Taking elevenses and so forth would have been a much better solution. :)
