Post-Meeting

Posted on Monday 15 January 2007

Well, the adult leadership in the Troop seems to think I’m some sort of super badass.  Like, really super badass Boy Scout.  They invited me in to help with a couple of Boards of Review, which a Scout gets when he advances to the next rank, even though I’d never done one in my entire life.  They seem to think I did OK, which was kinda nifty when you consider I was totally clueless and winging it with the little procedure sheet they gave me.  I always thought the adults had more trouble running this sort of thing than THAT.  I was all nervous during all my Boards way back when.  It’s kinda funny.  :-D

I got the info on the campout this weekend; apparently, adult advisors bring their own food and a sharing process with stoves and water pumps occurs.  Vehicle transport gets straightened out amongst the stuff that shows up.  Apparently, although one adult is in charge of the campout planning, his son is doing most of the legwork of it all.  The guy is highly respected by the Troop adults and Scouts and they tried to make him Senior Patrol Leader (again) this year, but he refused and they ended up making him the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.  So, the organization of this weekend is in good hands.

Finally, at the end of the meeting, the Scoutmaster took me aside and gave me a “job”:  tell them of any improvements and different, possibly better ways of doing things that I’ve seen to help the Troop run better, since I’d “been in alot of organizations.”  Now, I’ve only been in two Scouting organization:  My old Troop 836 and BTSR’s Venture Crew 1947.  So, I found this to be fairly amusing.  However, I cheerfully agreed.  The big thing this Troop needs to start doing is having their PLCs regularly, or Patrol Leaders Council, where all the Patrol Leaders get together with the Senior Patrol Leader and figure out what they want to do.  The Troops is always supposed to be “boy run,” with the adults helping cover the details to get done what the Scouts want to do, and the Scouts doing most of the legwork, eg fund raising for really big stuff.  But that all happens primarily in the PLC, and this Troop doesn’t do that very often and has poor attendance and organization when it does.  So, that’s something to chase the new leadership around on.

But first thing’s first, and that’s prep for this weekend.  Should be a blast!  :)
